During “Roux-en-Y” gastric bypass surgery performed in Boston, the defendant surgeon encountered complications in closing-off the plaintiff’s defunctionalized stomach and our medical malpractice attorneys had to take a deeper look at the procedure. To address the complications, the defendant surgeon hand-sutured the stomach, but inadvertently left a small segment open, resulting in post-operative infection (sepsis) and death. An autopsy performed shortly post-op demonstrated the dehiscence of the defunctionalized stomach which lead to leakage of gastric fluids into the plaintiff’s peritoneum.
