Massachusetts Car Accident Lawyer

Road Rage Car Accidents

Mention the term “road rage,” and most people imagine obscene gestures, excessive use of the car horn, tailgating, and other unsafe behavior directed towards other drivers, sometimes for perceived slights or, at times, for unsafe or reckless driving. News reports sensationalize the most extreme incidents. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, however, takes a slightly different view, and distinguishes aggressive driving from road rage.

The NHTSA defines aggressive driving as “when individuals commit a combination of moving traffic offenses so as to endanger other persons or property.” Car accidents involving road rage on the other hand, are more extreme acts that are criminal in nature, such as when an enraged driver chases down another driver with a shotgun.

Common behaviors associated with aggressive driving include speeding, tailgating, unsafe lane changes, or failure to obey traffic signals. There are no firm statistics for the number of aggressive driving-related car accidents. The NHTSA estimates, however, that aggressive driving accounted for about one-third of all car accidents, and about two-thirds of the resulting fatalities.
