Cape Cod at a Glance

Cape Cod was one of the first places settled by Europeans in North America. The Cape as it simply known, is an arm-shaped peninsula that lies with in Barnstable County, MA, and forms the eastern most point in the state. Although it was originally connected to the mainland, the 1912 Cape Cod Canal, effectively severed The Cape, making it a large island.

While Cape Cod has a year round population of about 230,000, it experiences a population explosion every summer with tourists flooding the towns and beaches between Memorial Day and Labor Day. Most businesses are specifically aimed at tourists and so are only opened during that season.

Cape Cod can be divided into four areas, the Upper Cape, Mid Cape, Lower Cape and Outer Cape. The Upper Cape includes the towns of Bourne, Falmouth, Mashpee and Sandwich. The Mid Cape includes Barnstable, Dennis and Yarmouth. There are seven villages in Barnstable, most notably Hyannis. Hyannis serves as the door to Nantucket and Martha’s Vineyard. The Lower Cape is home to Brewster, Chatham, Harwich and Orleans. The Outer Cape includes the towns of Eastham, Wellfleet, Truro and Provincetown.

Provincetown, or “P-town,” is one of the most recognizable towns on Cape Cod. P-town is best known for its beaches, artists and as a significant gay resort town.
