Medical Injury - Broken Femur

The femur is the largest of the bones in the human leg, and is therefore less commonly fractured as a result of traumatic injury, as compared with the bones that connect the knee to the foot, the fibula and tibia. The femur is the bone connecting the hip to the knee. The portion of the femur located closest to the hip is called proximal end, while the portion closest to the knee is the distal end. The proximal end of the femur has a ball-like structure called the “femoral head” which fits into a rounded “socket” in the hip called the ________, forming a ball joint. When excessive force impacts the hip and femur, a wide variety of traumatic injury can result, including fracture of the femoral head, fracture of the ______, both of which may require prosthetic replacement.
