Head and Brain Injury Lawyer

Among the most serious of all traumatic injuries is that of brain injury. Injuries to the brain commonly occur as a result of car accidents, motorcycle accidents, bicycle accidents, and falls. While the seriousness of many brain injuries are often apparent upon gross examination, “closed head injuries”, which can range in seriousness from minor concussions to life threatening brain injury, may be less obvious and may go undiagnosed for long periods of time.

Unlike open head injuries, which are often accompanied by loss of consciousness, evidence of skull fracture, loss breathing or pulse, and profound bleeding, the symptoms of closed brain injury may more difficult to discern and may include head ache, dizziness, impaired memory, drowsiness, nausea and vomiting, visual disturbances, difficulty hearing, and problems with balance, and other non-specific manifestations.

Categories of brain injury include:

CONCUSSION: A concussion is brought about by a trauma to the head, causing the brain to rebound within the skull and may involve loss of consciousness, impaired memory, fatigue, dizziness, nausea and vomiting. Professional prize fighters, who suffer “knock-out” punches, frequently sustain concussions and other potentially harmful brain trauma.

BRAIN CONTUSION: A strong blow to the head may be sufficient to cause bruising to the brain sufficient to cause swelling, and may lead to fluid or blood collection sufficient to raise intracranial pressure.

BLEEDING IN THE BRAIN: Trauma to the head may be sufficient to rupture blood vessels within and about the brain, in both open and closed brain injuries. The onset of symptoms may present immediately or in some cases several weeks or more after the trauma is sustained. Increased intracranial pressure caused by bleeding may build to produce headache, nausea, vomiting, alteration of consciousness, and pupils of unequal size. Death may result if the bleeding is not brought under control or the pressure within the skull is not reduced.

FRACTURED SKULL: While open skull fractures are among the most serious of all brain injuries, fractures may vary in appearance and in many cases may be difficult to detect without diagnostic studies such as x-rays or magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) studies.
